Electric Water Heater Replacement Installations, CT

water heater in atticThe standard electric water heater is a  popular water heater throughout America.  It’s the least expensive water heater replacement available, but the most expensive in operational costs.   Remember:  1) Heating water electrically is the least efficient/ most expensive way to heat water.  2) Connecticut and the Greater NYC area are among the highest rates for electricity in America.   (Note: For homes that have Solar PV systems, or in areas with reduced electrical rates; such as, Wallingford  CT, Electric options may have operational costs similar to gas-fire products)

Learn About Standard Electric “tank type” Water Heaters below:

Hubbell water heater
standard electric units consume a TON of power

Expensive to run: In the North East they are not the best choice based on high energy costs.  These water heaters in the North East have two, 4500 watt heating elements, which is like 2 blow dryers running all day long, 24-7.   Electric water heaters are expensive to run in my area of the world (Connecticut) because we have the second highest electric rates in the Nation, and cold winter seasons.  This is a “double whammy” and why electric heaters are pretty much a “if you have no other choice” situation in your home.

Space- mobility:  Condos and Townhouses commonly use electric water heaters, since they don’t have to be vented.   Not being vented means they can be stuck in many areas gas burning heaters can’t, such as under the stairs, or in a closet.  An electric water heater can be installed anywhere, as long as there is water and enough power near by.   Gas & oil burning water heaters need to tie into a chimney or exhaust vent going up to the roof-line, unlike electric water heaters.

D0llars spent on electricity:   The Energy usage greatly depends on the amount of hot water being consumed.
Small families may only spend $500 dollars on water heater and large families spend over $1,000.

Reasons for having an electric water heaters:
They are common for a few reason.
-Any “all electric” home has no other choice than an electric water heater.aos electric water heater
-Tight spaces; townhouses, condos, apartments (commonly found in attics)
-Can’t stand oil, would rather have electric.   (learn more)

“But Jay, I heard electric water heaters are pretty efficient”   That’s a little tricky.  First electric water heaters are efficient at Holding Hot Water, because they are not vented, meaning they don’t lose consent heat out of the top, like all gas water heaters and oil-fired heaters do.   Electric water heaters are  Not efficient at Creating Hot Water, that’s the main difference.  If you live alone and don’t use any hot water an electric water heater won’t cost you an arm and a leg monthly.  However if you have even a medium 3 person family an electric water heater in an area of higher electric utility rates (like the entire North East) an electric water heater will cost about the same as another mouth to feed, cloth, shelter and send to college.   Most families with 3+ family members require an 80 gallon electric water heater for adequate supply, costing $1,000 a year or more in operation costs.
